The Dos and Don’ts of Applying Epoxy For Cement Floors

Epoxy is a polymer that is used to coat and protect cement floors from wear and tear. It is also used as a sealant to prevent water or other liquids from seeping into the concrete. Epoxy for cement floors can be applied in either a solid or a liquid form, and it dries to form a hard, durable surface that is resistant to staining, scratching, and fading.

Epoxy comes in different colors depending on the color of the concrete before application. In addition, epoxy can be mixed with other materials such as sandstone for an attractive finish on any type of flooring material including wood floors or tile surfaces.

What is Epoxy for Cement Floors?

Epoxy for cement floors is a polymer that forms a protective layer on top of any flooring. It is made from the chemical compound epichlorohydrin and polyamines. The polymer dries into a hard substance, therefore protecting the floor from wear and tear from objects such as furniture or machinery.  It is also used to seal out liquids.

Epoxy can either be applied in solid or liquid form. It dries very quickly, usually within an hour, creating a hard protective coating on the cement’s surface that is resistant to scratching and staining.

Epoxy can be applied in two ways: as a liquid or as a solid. Apply with roller, brush, squeegee or sprayer. Solid epoxy for cement floors is poured onto the floor and allowed to self-level before hardening. Liquid epoxy must be floated on top of the floor to a thickness that will allow for even distribution of epoxy.

When applying epoxy to a cement floor, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Here are the dos and don’ts of applying epoxy to your cement floor:

DO:

  • Choose the right color of epoxy for your flooring
  • Mix the epoxy with other materials for a decorative finish
  • Apply epoxy in either a liquid or solid form
  • Use a roller, brush, squeegee, or sprayer to apply
  • Allow epoxy to self-level before hardening

DON’T:

  • Apply epoxy if the concrete is wet or damp
  • Apply if the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Apply if there is water or other liquids on the concrete floor
  • Apply epoxy to unfinished dry concrete
  • Allow epoxy to drip onto surrounding areas
  • Walk over wet epoxy with unprotected shoes, as it can damage the soles of your shoes.

Best Practices for Cleaning an Epoxied Cement Floor

When epoxy is applied to a cement floor, it is important to clean it properly in order to maintain its shine and luster. Here are some best practices for cleaning an epoxied cement floor:

  • Wipe up any spills or messes as soon as possible
  • Use a mild detergent or soap and water to clean the floor
  • Rinse the floor with clean water and dry with a cloth or towel
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean the floor
  • Use protective shoes when walking on the floor until it has dried completely.
  • Avoid spilling any liquids over the epoxy before it is dry, as this can create a film that is difficult to remove.
